Remember middle school gym class? If your experience was anything like mine, we often picked teams for the sport of the day. The teacher would assign team captains and they would take turns choosing teammates one by one. There was nothing worse than waiting to get picked and fearing that you would be the very last one chosen. 😱 Agony! Thank goodness once we’re adults, we don’t have to wait to be chosen anymore. That’s right! These days, you can choose yourself. Today. Right now.
The more difficult route
It’s always gratifying to be handed an opportunity. When someone else chooses us, we feel special and honored and wanted. This feeds our egos so there is the instant gratification of feeling worthy. In contrast, choosing yourself often means navigating solo down an unmarked road. Nobody is there waiting for you with a golden ticket.
I chose myself when I dove head first into retail over 8 years ago and opened Espresso Elevado. It was (and still can be) scary and lonely, draining, and sometimes even painful —speed mopping and cleaning at the end of a 12-hour day is brutal! It also is easily the most uplifting, heartfelt and fulfilling thing I have ever created. Although it was a more difficult route than getting a job, without a doubt it was the best route for me.
Muster up the courage
I chose myself again when I decided to write. Just as I was launching my blog, I received an interesting offer to pursue a voluntary leadership position that would have connected me globally with a lot more influential people in my industry. I initially turned it down due to the time commitment, and then was asked to reconsider, which was naturally very flattering. I did end up exploring the possibility but unsurprisingly wasn’t chosen. In all honesty, my heart just wasn’t in it! I knew that finding time to write while running a retail coffee business was challenging enough without adding one more thing.
Once we muster up the courage to choose ourselves, staying focused is the only way to reach our goals.
Stay the course
Doing anything meaningful is worth the time and effort it takes to get there. It never is as easy or fast as some people make it seem, and anyway, the value is in the journey.
One thing I know for sure is once you choose yourself — whether to pursue a goal, make a life change or just take time for some self-care — it becomes easier to do it again and again.
When we choose ourselves and stay the course we come to see that we are worthy all on our own just by virtue of our being. So, stop hoping someone else will choose you. Choose yourself! Today. Right now.
